Down Periscope
Down Periscope (1996)

IMDB rating: 5.30

Plot: Lt. Cmdr Tom Dodge (Kelsey Grammer) is one of the Navy’s best, even if he is a bit unconventional. But to take command of his own ship, he must first prove himself in simulated combat. Dodge is shocked when he’s put in command of the rusty and outdated USS Stingray. His crew consists of the Navy’s worst misfits and troublemakers. And to add salt to an open wound, Dodge’s old rival, Adml. Graham (Bruce Dern), will be supervising the opposing team, the crew of the more-up-to-code USS Orlando. Dodge must now prove that he and his crew are up to the challenge…

Which submarine movie is more accurate, Crimson Tide or Down Periscope?

Both. I served in the Army for eight years and I can tell you that it was a cross between Black Hawk Down and Sgt. Bilko (Steve Martin). You always have the serious side AND the ridiculous antics screaming in the background. They go hand-in-hand. Think of those times where you pulled pranks at work…. It’s the same for the military.

Plus, my friend (a former submariner) just confirmed that my answer was correct.

Hope I helped!

Crimson Tide. Down Periscope was just silly.

Both movies were ‘fiction’ so I’d go with ‘The Hunt For Red October’ or ‘U571′ for accuracy, as they were both based on real events and real submarines. :-)
